I used to meet my boyfriend in the room at the top of the steps in Bootham Bar – every lunchtime. This was back when boys from a certain boarding school were not allowed to have girlfriends.
The usual excuse to leave school was to go to the library. I would get there first and see him walking down Bootham to join me there for a few minutes. In those days, it was just a kiss goodbye, but to a 17-year-old girl it was so romantic.
This was just the beginning. We’ve been married for over 60 years. Bootham Bar will always be special to both of us. We have several paintings of it in our house.
